President Donald Trump on Friday called the mistrial in the Lindsay Clancy murder case a “horrible tragedy” and said she would face another trial.
Jury Deadlock Leads to Mistrial
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that the deaths of Clancy’s three children were a “horrible, horrible thing.” He warned that she would face consequences, could end up in a psychiatric institution or prison, and called the next trial “too bad.”
The judge declared a mistrial after a nine‑woman, three‑man jury said it could not reach a unanimous verdict following seven days of deliberations.
Clancy, 36, faces three counts of first‑degree murder for the January 2023 killings of her children Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months, in their Duxbury home. She has pleaded not guilty.
She admitted strangling the children with exercise bands, while her attorneys argue severe postpartum mental illness prevented her from understanding the wrongness of her actions. Prosecutors maintain the killings were deliberate and that she is criminally responsible.
The jury’s final note read, “With a heavy heart we report we cannot come to a unanimous decision.”
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington said the vote was 11‑1 in favor of an insanity verdict, though the exact split remains unknown. He asked the judge to remove a holdout juror he claimed was biased against those with “debilitating mental illness,” but the judge rejected the request and gave the defense an hour to seek emergency intervention from the state Supreme Judicial Court.
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz has not announced whether prosecutors will retry the case. Clancy remains at a state psychiatric hospital, according to the Associated Press.
