Kevin Downey Jr. and his friend Kruiser spent a 52‑hour weekend in Ann Arbor after a citywide power outage plunged the area into darkness.
Weekend of blackout, booze and bird calls
The outage, which lasted 52 hours, left the city without electricity, a situation Downey described as “most annoying” and “weird” given the usual link between bills and power.
On Friday night the two arrived in Ann Arbor to find no lights, so they impersonated Cubans and drank in the dark, according to Downey’s account.
The next day they joined a group of intoxicated members at the Dearborn Heights Moose Lodge, where Downey noted he was already hammered from a previous visit, while Kruiser needed only half a beer to sign up.
After returning home with electricity restored, they continued drinking, identified bird calls using a smartphone app, and prepared for Downey’s Monday radio show, he said.
Labor Day, which Downey called a “garbage holiday,” was discussed in his commentary, as he criticized leftist reinterpretations of the day and praised self‑employed workers.
He also recounted confronting a septuagenarian protester holding a “Honk for Democracy” sign, and an older leftist across the street demanding President Trump’s imprisonment, during a traffic stop before brunch.
