A Dearborn resident has sued the city, alleging it used taxpayer money to promote Islam while denying equal treatment to Christian and Jewish observances. The federal complaint, filed Thursday, claims the municipality favored one faith over others.
The suit, filed by Margot Cleveland, a senior legal correspondent for The Federalist and represented by the American Freedom Law Center, accuses Mayor Abdullah Hammoud of violating the First Amendment by endorsing Ramadan celebrations and refusing equal recognition for other holidays.
City records show thousands of dollars spent on Ramadan banners, a crescent‑moon park display, and police‑department T‑shirts, while no comparable funding was allocated to Easter, Passover, Christmas, or any Jewish observance. Cleveland said the decorations constitute a governmental endorsement of the Islamic faith.
Mayor Hammoud was quoted in a viral exchange telling a Christian pastor he was not welcome in the city and threatened to launch a parade celebrating the pastor’s departure. The mayor’s remarks, captured on social media, were condemned as hostile to religious dissent.
Dearborn hosts the largest per‑capita Muslim population in the United States, with more than half of its residents claiming Middle Eastern or North African ancestry. Federal agents also arrested a former intelligence officer linked to the Saddam Hussein era while he was hiding in the city over the weekend.
The case arrives as Islam’s visibility in Michigan intensifies, highlighted by Democrat Abdul El‑Sayed’s Senate campaign and a Dearborn Heights sheik declaring that Islam is “coming to America” to build a moral civilization.
