A 15‑year‑old girl in Guatemala woke up inside her coffin during her own funeral after her family thought she was dead. The shocking event occurred after she fell ill on the way to a clinic.
Family Turns Car Around After Believing She Died
She fell ill Saturday while her father drove her to a clinic. He said she stopped breathing and had no pulse, so he turned the car around and headed home, PerthNow reported.
The father told local media that he believed she was dead, according to The Sun. No doctor declared her dead and no official death certificate was issued, Infobae Guatemala reported.
The family bought a coffin and gathered relatives at their rural home in El Jocote. They did so just hours after she fell ill, Infobae reported.
During the funeral, the mother saw movement inside the coffin. Eight hours after falling ill, the teenager opened her eyes, sat up and began speaking, video circulating online shows, Infobae reported.
She told reporters she remembered severe chest pain before losing consciousness. She thanked God for being alive, MARCA reported.
No public medical assessment explaining the episode has been released. Authorities have not provided any explanation, Infobae reported.
