Social Security Administration announces 3.6% 2027 COLA

Related

Social Security will boost payments by 3.6% in 2027, delivering the biggest cost‑of‑living increase since 2023 and offering $75 more each month to the average retiree.

COLA Details and Timeline

The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% cost‑of‑living adjustment (COLA) for January 2027, affecting 76 million beneficiaries.

Commissioner Frank Bisignano said the adjustment ensures greater financial stability for recipients and affirmed that the program will remain solvent for another 90 years.

How the COLA Is Calculated

The figure follows the consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers (CPI‑W) measured during the third quarter of the year.

Inflation eased in recent years, producing smaller adjustments: 3.2% in 2024, 2.5% in 2025 and 2.8% in 2026.

Economic Drivers Behind the 2027 Increase

Rising energy prices, spurred by the Iran conflict and ongoing supply‑chain disruptions, contributed to the larger 2027 COLA.

While inflation has moderated, the energy surge kept the index higher than in prior years.

Expert Reaction

AARP CEO Myechia Minter‑Jordan warned that one in five seniors lack retirement savings and that rising grocery, health‑care and bill costs make the COLA essential for millions.

She emphasized that the adjustment helps keep pace with everyday expenses.

Financial Impact on Different Beneficiaries

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) noted that the 3.6% increase lifts average benefits by about $900 per year, while the wealthiest retirees see over $2,200 more, and top‑earning couples gain $3,600, pushing combined income above $100,000.
