Scott Bessent Unveils Sweeping Iran Sanctions Under Maximum Pressure

Related

President Donald Trump announced a new “D‑Day” sanctions package that will make Iran’s economy untenable and force Tehran to abandon its nuclear program. The measure extends his first‑term Maximum Pressure campaign and follows the decisive victory of Operation Epic Fury.

Maximum Pressure Delivered Crushing Results

From 2019 to 2021, Trump’s Maximum Pressure campaign cut Iranian oil exports from 2.5 million to fewer than 400,000 barrels per day, reduced foreign reserves from $122 billion to $12 billion, and pushed inflation above 30 percent. Allies that could add and subtract chose the United States over Iran, leaving Tehran isolated in global commerce.

Biden’s Reversal Undermined Pressure

The Biden administration ended sanctions enforcement before negotiations, causing oil exports to rise to 1.6 million barrels per day, reserves to climb to $26 billion and unemployment to fall to a historic low of 7.2 percent. Those funds were funneled into a larger military budget, an expanded nuclear program and regional terrorist proxies rather than domestic growth.

Epic Fury Compounded Economic Collapse

When Trump returned to office in 2025, inflation hovered at 50 percent, the rial traded at 1.87 million to the dollar and five banks teetered on collapse. The April 2024 blockade of Iranian exports through the Strait of Hormuz erased an additional $13 billion each month and cut off vital imports, driving a 10 percent contraction and a record rial rate of 2 million to the dollar.

Sanctions Now Aim for Surrender

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared that the new measures are no longer a limited tool but part of a crushing campaign designed to force Tehran’s surrender. Iranian airlines are banned, bank branches closed and any entity doing business with the regime will be cut off from the U.S. financial system with no exemptions.

Future Outlook

Analysts warn the intensified sanctions could trigger a full economic collapse, leaving Iran with only itself to blame. Trump insists a negotiated nuclear agreement — based on Iran’s renunciation of nuclear ambitions and cessation of hostile proxy activity — remains the only viable path to regional stability.
