A New Jersey mother and her two children were struck by a vehicle in a grocery store parking lot, killing the 9‑month‑old boy and leaving the mother and 5‑year‑old daughter seriously injured.

Maria Cabon Guzman, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, was behind the wheel and had never held a valid driver’s license in New Jersey or any other state, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
Investigators said Cabon Guzman was driving a Ford Fusion through the parking lot when the car hit the mother and the baby carriage carrying both children, the prosecutor’s office reported.
Ariadna Larazo‑Flores, who was with Cabon Guzman at the time, knew the driver lacked a license but allowed her to operate the vehicle, authorities added.
The mother and daughter were taken to a hospital where they remain in serious condition; the infant was pronounced dead at the scene, officials confirmed.
DHS officials told reporters that Cabon Guzman entered the United States in 2023 under the Biden administration and received a final order of removal just one month before the crash, a fact that has raised questions about immigration enforcement.
Both Cabon Guzman and Larazo‑Flores were arrested and are being held at Ocean County Jail pending detention hearings, the sheriff’s office said.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit‑Vehicular Homicide Squad, Jackson Township and Lakewood Township police, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, continue to investigate the incident.
Political reactions poured in after the tragedy; a spokesperson for Governor Mikie Sherrill declined to comment when asked about the death, a silence criticized by several advocacy groups.
Calls for stricter immigration enforcement and faster deportation processes have intensified, with officials urging ICE to prioritize removal of individuals with criminal records.
