Ocasio‑Cortez said she is weighing whether to run for president or challenge Schumer for the New York Senate seat, noting she will decide based on where she can do the most good.
In a recent fundraising email, she wrote that speculation about 2028 is “nearly every interview and event,” and that her decision will hinge on “Where can I do the most good?”
The 36‑year‑old lawmaker told the New York Times that she will announce after the 2026 midterms, emphasizing impact over deference.
If she pursues a statewide race, she could trigger a generational battle with the 76‑year‑old Schumer, who has served in the Senate since 1999.
Schumer has kept his 2028 plans open, saying his first focus is winning the Senate back in 2026.
Fox News Digital sought comment from Schumer’s office but received no reply before publication.
Democratic strategists say Schumer is unlikely to run again even if his party regains the majority, noting “everyone has an expiration date.”
One strategist added that she is “in a good position to win statewide,” while another suggested Schumer may want to hand the reins to a “generational leader” amid fierce New York competition.
A Quinnipiac University poll released Sept. 17‑20 showed Schumer’s approval at 36%–54% and Ocasio‑Cortez viewed favorably by 41% of voters, with 36% unfavorable.
Recent text messages to supporters criticized the Democratic establishment, urging a break from “the concentration of greed” and noting her 2018 win “represented a threat to the typical D.C. power structure.”
Ocasio‑Cortez said a Senate win would be “the best possible problem we could have as a country,” and she will cross that bridge when she gets there.
