A massive sinkhole ripped open Nicolas Cage’s Malibu driveway, threatening his $10.5 million beachfront home. The 30‑foot‑by‑30‑foot collapse appeared Tuesday morning after heavy rains and high surf from Tropical Storm Marie.
Sinkhole Emerges at Sea Level Drive
The hole, estimated at 30 feet by 30 feet, swallowed asphalt, concrete, a privacy fence section and a construction‑site porta‑potty, according to Page Six. The collapse also exposed underlying soil, prompting a temporary road closure.
First responders arrived at the 31600 block of Sea Level Drive around 5:45 a.m. after reporting a suspected gas line break, and Los Angeles County Fire Department units confirmed a damaged gas line that crews shut off before repairs. Firefighters secured the area while utility crews assessed the damage.
No injuries were reported and investigators found no occupants inside Cage’s residence at the time. Emergency personnel verified that the structure remained stable and no residents were present.
KTLA’s Rich Prickett noted, “Substantial damage was done to this home, or at least the driveway, and the property appears to be under renovation.” The damage was evident from the broken concrete and displaced fence sections.
A fire department spokesman said the collapse resulted from coastal erosion intensified by the high tides and surf linked to Tropical Storm Marie. Authorities linked the erosion to the storm’s prolonged surf activity.
Cage, 62, purchased the property in 2024 while it was undergoing renovations. Renovation work was ongoing at the time of the incident.
A Cage representative did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment. Page Six reached out for comment but received no response.
The home, built by Jose Liberman of Liberman Broadcasting in the 1990s, remained in the Liberman family until Cage’s 2024 purchase. Lenard Liberman told The New York Times, “My parents made this house their weekend happy place, and after my father’s death my mother could no longer endure the memories.”
