Former NFL placekicker Jay Feely storms the Dallas midterm convention stage Wednesday, announcing his bid for Arizona’s First Congressional District.
Feely Challenges Democrat Amish Shah in Competitive Race
Feely, a Republican from Arizona, faces Democrat Amish Shah for the seat vacated by retiring Rep. David Schweikert.
In a pre‑convention interview, Feely said he will deliver “inspirational” remarks aimed at younger voters who doubt they can achieve the American dream.
He identified the economy as the district’s top concern, noting that Scottsdale and Paradise Valley residents demand stronger growth.
Feely pointed to President Trump’s 2024 win over Kamala Harris, saying the border crisis remains a voter priority despite reduced activity at the border.
“We need to codify border policies,” Feely told Townhall. “Executive orders alone cannot stop illegal immigration; legislation is required.”
He referenced a 1980s Reagan‑Tip O’Neill agreement that promised amnesty but failed to end illegal immigration, arguing that the resulting decades‑long neglect offshored jobs and eroded the middle class.
Feely added that recent re‑onshoring efforts and new trade parameters aim to restore manufacturing and investment in the United States.
As a political outsider, Feely expressed surprise at the influence of money in elections, saying he wishes campaign finance played a smaller role in determining elected officials.
His opponent, Dr. Amish Shah, has centered his campaign on protecting abortion rights, warning that federal action could threaten reproductive healthcare in Arizona.
Shah’s campaign manager, Eve Zhurbinskiy, countered that while Feely celebrates the “Big Ugly” spending bill, Shah remains in emergency rooms caring for Arizonans in need.
