Stafford County, one of Virginia’s wealthiest jurisdictions, is weighing removal of Veterans Day from its school calendar for the 2027‑2028 academic year.
Potential Calendar Changes
The school board met Tuesday to review two draft calendars for 2027‑2028, one of which keeps Veterans Day as a student and staff holiday while the other omits it.
A separate draft for 2028‑2029 also excludes Veterans Day because the holiday falls on a Saturday that year.
The proposals stem from a committee of parents, students, community leaders, staff and building administrators.
State law requires 180 instructional days or 990 hours; Stafford has met the hour requirement but fell short on days since 2021, according to the Fredericksburg Free Press.
The county increasingly grants days off for non‑Christian observances, including Yom Kippur, Eid al‑Fitr, Eid al‑Adha and Diwali.
Winter break still includes Christmas, preserving a two‑week recess.
Superintendent Daniel Smith warned that any move to drop Veterans Day would require schools to conduct observances, lessons and appreciation activities.
Stafford County’s 12 % veteran population, roughly 20,000 of 171,000 residents, underscores the demographic stakes.
Board member Patricia Healy voiced conflict, saying the county has added many holidays for other groups and must consider whether veterans deserve the same recognition.
Student representative Safdar Qureshi argued the debate is about giving students and staff a day off, not about religious status, and said he wants at least one, preferably two, holidays each month for mental rest.
The board chair directed staff to produce a third 180‑day calendar that retains only federal and state holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and President’s Day, eliminating religious observances.
If approved, Stafford would join Fairfax County, which removed Veterans Day earlier this year while keeping Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
