Michigan Player Apologizes as Coach‑Trashing Messages Leak

Michigan’s season has imploded in five games, and the fallout is now public.

Wolverines’ Season in Turmoil

After a controversial win over Western Michigan, the Wolverines dropped a last‑second loss to Iowa and fell at Minnesota for the first time in nearly 50 years in back‑to‑back weeks.

Senior tight end Zack Marshall vented his frustration in a private group chat, directly blaming offensive coordinator Jason Beck for undermining the tight ends and for the quarterback’s slump.

Marshall said Beck told the tight end group they were “not valuable” and that play‑calling was the main reason Bryce Underwood’s production had dipped this season, adding that the situation was “way worse” than former head coach Sherrone Moore’s tenure.

He later apologized on X after the leaked messages spread across social media, confirming his criticism was genuine.

Michigan’s athletic department told Sport & State that the coaching staff is aware of the comments and has spoken with Marshall, but declined to say whether he will face discipline.

Public criticism from a senior player just five games into the season threatens momentum as the Wolverines enter their bye week, with ranked matchups against Penn State, Indiana, Oregon and Ohio State still on the schedule.
