Expansion and broader oil market pressure
While the price shock grips motorists, Costco announced it will open 14 new warehouses across the United States and Canada, reinforcing its growth amid volatile commodity markets.
Analysts say the synthetic oil relies on Group III base oils, most of which are imported from Persian Gulf producers where conflict‑driven supply cuts have tightened availability.
Brent crude topped $109 per barrel on Monday, up from under $72 in early July, as uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz threatens shipments.
AAA reports the national average for regular gasoline rose to $4.32 per gallon, the highest level in more than a year, while diesel hit a record $6.23 per gallon, climbing from $5.90 a week earlier.
Costco has not disclosed whether rival retailers such as Walmart, Amazon or AutoZone will adjust their own pricing or impose purchase caps.
