Fair Deal for Renters: Government Overreach Threatens Private Property

Democrat David Crowley insists his platform matches that of primary rival Francesca Hong, saying there is no substantive difference between their policies. He aligns with Hong on defunding the police and making Wisconsin a sanctuary state, and his “Fair Deal for Wisconsin Renters” proposes to curb rent spikes, force landlord repairs, overhaul eviction rules and ban rent‑fixing software.

Critics Decry Government Overreach

Crowley’s plan would “stop runaway rent increases,” compel property maintenance and introduce “fairness” to evictions, according to his October 7 tweet, which also pledged to end “rent‑fixing software.”

Wendy Scott, a Twitter user, responded, “Yes. Let’s get the government involved. That always works.”

Opponents warn the proposal would raise taxes and reduce housing supply. Jason Szemborski noted, “It doesn’t say how any of this will be done or funded, what a shock. It’s all platitudes with no substance.”

Obed, another commentator, argued, “Property taxes increase rent.”

Ms. Lady A added, “You make me laugh because you caused all this problem by letting a bunch of illegals in and paying people not to pay their rent, forcing owners to jack up rents.”

Crowley also links his rent agenda to broader immigration concerns, stating he will be an ally of criminal illegal aliens, a claim condemned by Gregory Jon, who warned, “Wait until the Supreme Court strikes down Act 10 and you raise taxes—renters haven’t seen anything yet.”

One tweet asserted, “$6 billion a year in more taxes means rents will skyrocket.”
