Haiti TPS extensions draw fire as gangs terrorize nation
The United States must stop importing Haitian gang members and start protecting American lives, activist Billy Binion declared on September 9, 2026. The nation cannot afford to treat Haiti as a perpetual aid recipient while gangs terrorize its people.
Binion posted a tweet demanding that officials who champion deportations live in Haiti, where gangs recently murdered dozens, kidnapped children, and set a 70‑year‑old man on fire. He warned that those who push for open borders should experience the daily fear residents endure.
Haitian nationals have been eligible for temporary protected status since the 2010 earthquake, a designation the Biden administration has repeatedly extended despite the original “temporary” language. DHS data shows the program has been renewed in 2015, 2017, 2020 and 2023, keeping roughly 50,000 Haitians in legal limbo.
Critics say the prolonged TPS program burdens U.S. taxpayers and fails to address the root causes of migration, such as endemic violence and weak governance. A policy analyst at the Center for Immigration Studies noted that the United States should not be responsible for importing populations from failing states.
Binion’s remarks come amid a broader debate over U.S. foreign policy, with some politicians labeling the United States a “colonial power” that abandoned Haiti after the earthquake. Others argue the country’s internal failures, not external intervention, explain its current crisis.
White House officials have not responded to requests for comment, but a DHS spokesperson said the agency “continues to assess conditions in Haiti and will make determinations consistent with U.S. law and national security interests.” The agency emphasized it will act consistently with law and security considerations.
If the goal is to reduce violence, officials should prioritize removing individuals linked to criminal gangs and enforcing strict immigration standards, Binion concluded. He urged a halt to further Haitian migration until the threat is contained.
