King Charles Bars Harry and Meghan from Royal Duties
King Charles III has sent a clear message to senior officials: Prince Harry and Meghan remain non‑working royals. The monarch’s letter, issued by Lord Chamberlain Lord Benyon, bars the couple from any public role that invokes royal authority.
The document, distributed to Harry’s team, government officials, military leaders and Lord Lieutenants, makes clear that any future public activity must be undertaken in a private capacity. Palace sources say the intent is to prevent the Duke and Duchess from leveraging their titles while pursuing commercial or charitable work.
Newsweek, which obtained the letter’s text, reports that it describes the couple’s status as “akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests,” and confirms their royal styles remain unused. It also reaffirms the Sandringham Agreement of January 2020, which prohibits a “half‑in, half‑out” arrangement that would allow them to draw on royal status while engaging in outside ventures.
Harry and Meghan returned to Britain in late August with their children, Archie and Lilibet, after six years in Montecito, California. They are settling into a privately owned home outside London while retaining their California residence and a property in Portugal.
The move follows a private meeting in July between the King, Queen Camilla and the Sussexes at Highgrove House, the first family gathering since the 2020 rift. That meeting came after Harry’s memoir and the couple’s Netflix series sparked public criticism of the royal family.
Buckingham Palace has not issued a formal comment on the letter as of Monday afternoon. The Sussexes’ office has also remained silent on the clarification.
