Florida Bans Luxury Purchases in Welfare Program
Florida has tightened restrictions on taxpayer‑funded assistance, banning purchases of gambling, tobacco, tattoos, adult content and other non‑essential items.
Governor Ron DeSantis announced the amendment to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) State Plan on August 24, expanding the list of items recipients cannot buy with EBT cards.
The update forbids using benefits for alcohol, gambling, adult entertainment, tobacco, vaping products, video games, theme‑park tickets, tattoos, spa services, tanning and psychic readings, according to the governor’s statement.
DeSantis said the policy safeguards public funds and compels recipients to prioritize essential needs such as food, shelter, clothing and child care.
Opponents claim the rule curtails personal freedom, but officials point to fraud concerns and the program’s original intent.
