Education Department Urges Schools to Teach Students About Communism Dangers

Related

The Department of Education ordered schools to teach the deadly legacy of communism and socialism. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said the curriculum must expose the human toll of these ideologies.

Education Dept Pushes Anti‑Communist Curriculum

McMahon sent a letter to teachers on Sept. 30 urging schools to contrast socialism’s violent history with the success of the constitutional republic. She warned that collectivization, centralized planning, political coercion and suppression of dissent cause untold suffering.

The letter cites 65 million deaths in China and 20 million in the former Soviet Union, according to Tribute to Liberty, a Canadian charity. China, the Soviet Union, Cambodia and Ukraine experienced industrial‑scale murders under false socialist promises.

McMahon warned that failing to teach this history leaves students vulnerable to modern socialist propaganda spread by influencers. She noted that socialism serves as the gateway to imposing communism.

States such as Texas, Florida, Arizona and Tennessee have already enacted laws requiring instruction on communist regimes. Florida’s State Board of Education approved the History of Communism standards last year, while Texas passed Senate Bill 24 mandating related curriculum.

McMahon said the surge in youth support for socialism makes the education push urgent. A Gallup poll found 43 percent of Americans view socialism positively, with 57 percent of 18‑ to 34‑year‑olds holding favorable views.

Trump Administration Ramps Anti‑Communist Messaging

President Donald Trump called communism the “most serious threat” to the United States since its founding during a June address at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference. He warned that the ideology seeks to destroy religious liberty.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced sanctions on Cuba on Sept. 17, labeling the regime a corrupt failed state that threatens U.S. national security. He said ordinary Cubans endure blackouts, food shortages and brutality while regime elites hoard resources.
