Maine’s two U.S. senators have demanded President Trump release home heating oil from the Northeast reserve to curb soaring prices. The lawmakers warned that global supply disruptions are driving Mainers into a financial crisis.
Letter to the President
Senators Susan Collins and Angus King sent a letter Tuesday urging the president to tap the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve. They said the Middle East conflict and the Russia‑Ukraine war have limited global supply, leaving Maine especially vulnerable.
Heating Oil Prices Soar
The statewide average heating oil price reached $5.77 on Sept. 14, according to the Maine Department of Energy Resources. That figure is 74% higher than the $3.32 average recorded on Sept. 15, 2025.
National Fuel Costs Remain High
AAA reports diesel at $6.52 per gallon, the highest ever recorded, while regular gasoline sits at $4.48. Regular gas remains below the June 2022 record of $5.02.
Senators’ Background
Collins, a moderate Republican, has served nearly three decades and seeks re‑election this year. King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, brings a different perspective to the request.
