Tens of thousands of high school students filled San Salvador’s Jorge “El Mágico” González National Stadium on Sunday night, united by excitement for President Nayib Bukele’s “El Salvador Renace” education initiative. Many attendees arrived early, waved banners, and chanted the president’s name.
Massive Student Rally Marks Education Push
The crowd’s energy was palpable as students danced, shouted, and celebrated on the stadium floor. President Bukele stepped onto the stage to applause.
Bukele announced that the government would fund 50,000 scholarships this year for public high‑school graduates to pursue university degrees, technical training, vocational courses or study abroad opportunities. He said the scholarships give youth choices that previous generations lacked.
The initiative builds on a broader education investment plan that includes new schools, refurbished facilities, proper dress codes, and supplies, all backed by private sector partnerships. Private investments and prisoner labor have accelerated school construction.
To finance the scholarships, Bukele signed a $100 million agreement with the Inter‑American Development Bank, and he is coordinating additional funding from the World Bank and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.
He pledged to raise annual education spending to more than $3 billion, exceeding 8 % of GDP, triple the amount previous governments allocated.
International benchmarks recommend 4‑6 % of GDP for education; the United States spends about 5.5 %, while Bukele’s target surpasses that threshold.
Infobae reported the plan also includes computers for all students, nationwide internet connectivity, training for tens of thousands of teachers, curriculum updates, and new technology, robotics and AI labs, with expansion to remote areas.
Bukele warned that the scholarship deal requires effort from recipients: “We give you the scholarship, we give you the opportunity, but you must study and work hard.”
He added that discipline, not fleeting motivation, sustains long‑term success, noting that no government can provide effort for individuals. Bukele dismissed critics, saying journalists present witnessed pure joy, not youth oppression, as he posted on Twitter that youth had moved from fear to joy.
The event signals a new start for a generation building a safer, more capable nation, according to the president’s remarks.
