Dr. Amy Acton was assaulted at the Canfield Fair, injuring two people, her campaign confirmed. The attack happened while she stood inside the Mahoning County Democratic Party tent.
“At the Canfield Fair, an armed individual lunged at Dr. Acton, injuring several people,” communications director Addie Bullock said in a statement posted on Acton’s website.
Dr. Acton and her husband Eric thanked law enforcement for their swift response and prayed for the victims’ recovery, saying such violence has no place in Ohio.
Acton was inside the Mahoning County Democratic Party tent when the assailant attacked, local Democrats reported.
Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene confirmed that two older Democratic Party volunteers were knocked to the ground by the attacker, according to 21 News.
Christopher Anderson, chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, posted on Facebook that the suspect was arrested after knocking volunteers down and brandishing weapons.

The Mahoning County Democratic Party condemned the violence as reprehensible and urged leaders across the aisle to denounce it.
Police have not released details on the suspect, and the Canfield Police Department did not respond to inquiries.
Acton and Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy are locked in a tight gubernatorial race that analysts consider one of the most contested contests in the nation.
Recent polls show Acton leading in six of ten surveys, tied in one, while Ramaswamy leads in three, underscoring a competitive contest.
